What to Bring ...
GENERAL SUPPLIES:
You will need your sewing machine,
coordinating thread, ruler, mat and a rotary cutter with a
sharp new blade. A Sara Nephew 60 degree triangle is very
helpful for this project. Bring pins and any other supplies you
like to have with you for class. Power cords, table lamps and
chair cushions are nice to have too.
REQUIRED:
One-Block Wonders book by Maxine Rosenthal (available at the quilt
shop)
Pins: Flower head pins work best to
pin your layers and cut your strips
Bamboo Stiletto for sewing rows
together
FABRIC:
You may want between 4 and 5 yards of
fabric depending upon the pattern repeat on your fabric. The
book gives very good advice on buying your fabric. Some fabrics
have a 12” repeat, and others a 24”, so you must
take this into account when purchasing fabric. The book is very
helpful on that point.
If you get less fabric, you will have
fewer units and thus a smaller quilt. My top is smaller as I
wanted to use this particular fabric and made use of what I had
on hand.
For this class, I am using the 2006 large
scale Shop Hop Seattle fabric which makes a nice bunch of
blocks. Stay away from fabrics that have a big area all the
same color, or something with no design, to add interest when
cut.
Be sure you choose a good fabric with a
great print, stay away from straight lines and backgrounds that
are too plain. Some fabrics work much better than others.
