December Block: Yankee Puzzle

Welcome to Saturday Sampler 2007. We are very excited to present this new sampler quilt to you for your 2007 block of the month quilt project. You loved the unique and beautiful quilt while it hung in the shop this year and beginning in January 2007, we'll work on this quilt together, block by block, sewing and piecing together over 12 months. Using RJR fabrics from a new Jinny Beyer collection, the fabrics will be in her signature jewel tones, pairing with black, white, grey and fuchsia. Please read more about Jinny Beyer below.

If you are a beginner or first time quilter, please consider making just the 12 blocks in the book and let us provide you with a very easy setting using sashing to complete a simple lap quilt.

Just in case you're getting anxious to know which blocks we will be doing for our sampler next year, here they are:

Jan -- Capital T
Feb -- Christmas Star
March -- Corn and Beans
April -- Coronation
May -- Crown of Thorns
June -- Duck and Ducklings
July -- Gentleman's Fancy
Aug -- Honeymoon
Sept -- Snowflake
Oct -- Weathervane
Nov -- Windmill Star
Dec -- Yankee Puzzle

Here's how the Saturday Sampler works:

  1. Begin by purchasing the book at Gathering Fabric Quilt Shop. Save your receipt for proof of purchase.
  2. Spend some time with the book to learn about the blocks, block frames and quilt settings. Read the introduction for inspiration and the section on quilt making basics for review. We will be doing the No Way Out quilt on page 69, which is also pictured on the back cover of the book. It also appears on our website. The name is not intended to intimidate you, you'll see why as we piece along.
  3. The 12 monthly-jeweled quilt blocks are free. Double up on the blocks you especially like to make 18 in all for the original setting by gathering fat quarters in the jeweled palette. You will need to purchase the fabric kit for the 17 alternating blocks in black, white and grey, ahead of time in January while fabric is available, or you may choose to use your own fabric here if you wish. The quilt shop will stay stocked in RJR fabrics from Jinny Beyer for the rich jewel tones she offers in her collections.
  4. Based on your setting choice, you may choose to make additional blocks each month. At the end of year, your quilt will be ready to be assembled quickly. The blocks are not difficult and the alternating blocks are fast and easy chain blocks. We will concentrate on the border blocks and pieces during summer 2007. Borders, backing, binding and alternating blocks are not included in the free sampler kits. We will, however, have ample supply of the fabrics chosen for this quilt from the Jinny Beyer collection.

Thanks to: Sue's Rags Quilt Shop in Federal Way, Washington for the quilts and inspiration for this project. Thanks also to Rhoda and Donna at Martingale & Company for the idea for this sampler quilt and for loaning us the quilt during the summer.

We invite you to take a moment to explore the rich and colorful world of Jinny Beyer by visiting her website and viewing the incredibly rich jeweled palette featured on her web pages. http://www.jinnybeyer.com/about/index.cfm
